چکیده

We propose a generative classifier which models the hidden factors that underpin the neural representation of objects with a multivariate multiple linear regression model. Our results indicate that object features derived from a feature norming study or word cooccurrences in web corpus can capture some of these hidden factors and explain a significant portion of the systematic variance in the neural activity observed in an object-contemplation task. Furthermore, the resulting regression model is useful for decoding mental states, can generalize across people, and allows us to extrapolate the neural activity for unseen objects, which cannot be done with a discriminative classifier.

Distinct neural systems subserve person and object knowledge.

Studies using functional neuroimaging and patient populations have demonstrated that distinct brain regions subserve semantic knowledge for different classes of inanimate objects (e.g., tools, musical instruments, and houses). What this work has yet to consider, however, is how conceptual knowledge about people may be organized in the brain. In particular, is there a distinct functional neuroan...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

The structure and connectivity of semantic memory in the healthy older adult brain

The anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) have been proposed to serve as a "hub" linking amodal or domain general information about the meaning of words, objects, facts and people distributed throughout the brain in semantic memory. The two primary sources of evidence supporting this proposal, viz. structural imaging studies in semantic dementia (SD) patients and functional imaging investigations, are...

The Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory

Background:  Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction."  The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...
